Update

Wow, long time no update. Well, things have been insanely busy recently, on all fronts, and I have just been too busy to sit back and write some stuff down. So, here comes another burst of bullet points:

  • I have recently moved over to the Ubuntu distro team formally inside Canonical and I am now closer aligned with the team. Before, I was a separate function in the company that happened to work on Ubuntu, but being part of the team formally makes a lot more sense. So far the communication lines have been much clearer and I am loving being part of the team.
  • July was an insane month of travel. It went something like this, one after the other with no off days in-between – week build up to LUGRadio Live 2007 and planning, LUGRadio Live 2007, down to London for the distro sprint for a week, back up to Birmingham for GUADEC for a week, off to Oregon for Ubuntu Live and then OSCON for the week. As an example of the craziness, while at OSCON I was having something like 9 meetings a day. Busy days.
  • Aq, Adam, Chris and I went out for Chinese and then returned to my gaff for a LUGRadio Sprint. In it we developed new ideas and direction for Season 5, decided on dates for the new season and then brainstormed over 50 ideas. Season 5 is going to shake things up, big time. We also discussed LRL and LRLUSA. We finally got to bed at 5am.
  • Next day, up at 7.30am. Ugh. My parents came up and my dad brought some industrial strength gardening stuff to chop down the forest that had grown around the house. It was pretty hardcore – he had an outfit and everything. The pooches wondered what the hell was going on…
  • Been jamming quite a bit with Seraphidian. I am now playing drums in the band, and I am really excited about it. I have been harbouring a frustrated drummer instinct for a while, and I am itching to really grow and excel as a death metal drummer and get out there and play gigs as a drummer. We have also changed our direction somewhat, still retaining the Seraphidian chug, but we are now more dynamic, thrashy and energetic. We are all psyched about this new direction, and I am really looking forward to the oodles of drumming. On Sunday I drummed for 6 hours and nearly collapsed. :)

I have also been having something of a music binge – expanding my already pretty hefty music collection with new bands and albums. This is the list of bands in my collection so far – if any of you metallers have any other suggestions for the kind of stuff I could like, do scribe it into the comments:

  • http://blog.zrmt.com Andy Loughan

I saw 36 crazyfists about 2 years ago, they were supported by Belvedere and Buller for my Valentine which I thought were both better than 36. You’ve got to have Dream Theatre in the collection too. Jo Satriani is a good one. Love Saatch Boogie.

  • http://www.talios.com Mark Derricutt

What – no Symphony X? How about Mastodon, Twisted Into Form, Extol, Poisonblack, Destruction, Leatherwolf, Kamelot, Circus Maximus, Continuo Renacer, Consortium Project, Dark Tranquillity

  • http://danieltiecher.com/ Daniel Anderson Tiecher

I have to third what both Jérémie Laval and Yanko Kaneti suggested: Dream Theater! Mike Portnoy is considered one of the best drummers around. For me he IS the best. Listen to it, Jono. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

And, as you come from a trashier background i suggested you to start listening to Dream Theater by their Train of Thought album or simple go to their Live at Budokan DVD to see one of the best live shows of the metal scene.

    Cheers!

PS: Will you release any song for us to listen you drumming? ;)

    TOOL!

  • http://www.lovesunix.net/blog David Nielsen

I will clime in with a recommendation for “Am I Blood”

  • Yanko Kaneti

and for one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time – Corrosion of Conformity

  • http://thomas.apestaart.org/ Thomas Vander Stichele

As mentioned before – you should try a Catherine Wheel album, the (late) band fronted by Rob Dickinson’s nephew. For someone of your tastes I would suggest to try Chrome or Happy Days first.

Also I am surprised to not see Mastodon on your list. Tool should be on it too though maybe it’s a bit non-traditional as far as metal goes.

I don’t understand why Within Temptation was suggested – what a joke band, ignore them.

I managed to completely avoid seeing Black Dahlia Murder live this weekend, hurray for me !

  • http://thomas.apestaart.org/ Thomas Vander Stichele

(obviously I meant Rob Dickinson, Bruce’s nephew)

  • http://ploum.frimouvy.org Ploum

I guess that if Dream Theater is missing, it’s just an error when writing this note. I hope… :)

  • Félim Whiteley

Damn I was gonna say Corrosion of Conformity too.. (shakes fist at Yanko Kaneti ;)

Saw them live at my first gig, Megadeth/COC Dublin SFX Centre 1994 (or was it 1995?!).. Awesome

  • http://www.kallisti.net.nz/blog Robin

You have Ihsahn but not Emperor? Also: Anathema, Tristania, Sirenia, Penumbra, After Forever, Within Temptation, and Opeth come to mind as favourites of mine.

  • Félim Whiteley

Ah you don’t have Therapy… excellent band, seen ‘em live in Glasgow 4 times.. Not very heavy but seen as you have Ugly Kid Joe in there heavy doesn’t seem to be a criteria ! :)

  • Federico

Reading your list, i’m sure you’ll appreciate Sadist!

    http://www.sadistribe.com/

    Bye !

  • Steve

I’m not into metal that much, but I absolutely love Neurosis. The album “Times Of Grace” would be a good start. Check out the video for Locust Star to get an idea of what they are like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmdmnnv2NkY

  • http://www.stillbreathing.co.uk Chris

Another vote for Anathema here, and also My Dying Bride, Dominion and Bal Sagoth. Anything from the Peaceville label is good (http://www.peaceville.com/)

    Insomnium

Sonic Syndicate might also be worth a try.

    Sabatons a great back :D

Turmion Kätilöt- good industrial metal band

  • David Holmes

Considering some of other power metal bands you list, Sonata Arctica seems like a glaring omission. The top six bands Last.fm calls “similar” to them are all on your list.

  • Mike Simmons

Mushroomhead – XX or XXiii Violent Work of Art Sub Dub Micromachine (found through Chronix Radio and now own album)

  • Adamzap

opeth and mastodon and even Rush

Mike Simmons is right on. Chronix Radio kicks ass! They always find these awesome metal bands I’ve never heard of. Another one from Chronix – Mind Shelter!

  • Mesut

How come you don’t have Opeth in there.

  • Allix

If you like Children of Bodom you’ll like Norther too. The wake is another great finnish death-band.

Godflesh Rammstein Spineshank Through The Eyes Of The Dead Unearth White Zombie

    and perhaps… Gogol Bordello

  • Ricardo

As someone mentioned Dream Theater you could check a great project compose by some of the members, if you like instrumental: Liquid Tension Experiment. How about Machine Head, Type O Negative, Kilgore, Tool, Moonspell, g//z/r, Clawfinger, just to name a few!!!!!

  • http://resiak.livejournal.com/ Will Thompson

Boris and Isis should be on that list somewhere, and maybe DeathBoy.

You should also check out Oceansize, but maybe they’ll be too elaborate for your aesthetically-stunted tastes. ;-)

  • alex

I absolutely have to suggest Symphony X, they are simply great.

  • Peter Van den Bosch

melodic death metal: * Dissection (Storm Of The Light’s Bane album): pioneering and unique melodic death metal, despite the (now dead) frontman’s actions and beliefs * Hypocrisy (Abducted and Virus albums) * The Seventh (Cursed Earth Wasteland)

Black/Heavy metal: “I” project of Abbath, the Immortal guy

Some bands from which I am a bit less sure they match your taste: * Moonspell (Memorial/Irreligious/Wolfheart) * Opeth (Ghost Reveries) * My Dying Bride

  • Travis Reitter

Justin Timberlake. Come on now! Justin Timberlake!

Also, does LUGRadio really qualify as metal?

  • chris

    My tip: Funeral from Norway

  • Patrik

just to complete THE three german thrash metal bands: Destruction, Kreator and SODOM

  • Mike Simmons

I also like to check out http://www.theprp.com. They have metal news and I’ve found some bands I never heard of before.

Finally… Back in the day I was a big Mushroomhead fan…check out the myspace page of Jason Popson’s new band: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=187427664

  • Ian

Sabbat (first two albums just remastered), Sacrilege (UK doom/thrash band) and Skyclad.

  • Corvias

Clutch. Not quite metal, not really fusion. Not really sure how to classify it, actually. Try it though. You’ll like it. I listen to it on my walk to work in the morning. Wakes me up, and puts me in a good mood. (their lyrics are really creative and sometimes hilarious).

Their self-titled album is a classic, but their most recent (Robot Hive Exodus) is imho even better.

  • http://silent-blade.org Athropos

If you like Dying Fetus, you should try Misery Index which was founded by former members of DF:

    http://www.myspace.com/miseryindex

They have quite a decent drummer :-)

  • http://informationhunger.blogspot.com C.M

I see you have a lot of Swedish bands already (Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Dismember, Entombed, Hammerfall, In Flames, Meshugga, Katatonia, Soilwork, The Haunted and even Yngwie) but I have some more to add to that list:

Abhinanda – The Rumble (Hardcore) Breach – Kollapse (Alternative Metal, think Neurosis) Mustasch – Above All (Heavy Metal) Nine – Killing Angels (melodic death metal, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yat-SwcI5c) Raised Fist – Sound of the Republic (Aggressive Hardcore) Tiamat – Wildhoney (Death Metal)

The albums listed after each band is a good one to start with.

For some other obvious non-swedish additions to your list:

Alice In Chains Bane Billy Talent Blood Has Been Shed Boy Sets Fire Cave-In Coal Chamber Coheed And Cambria Converge Eighteen Visions From Autumn To Ashes Jr Ewing Keelhaul Kyuss Looking Forward McLusky Melvins Ministry Modern Life Is War Poison the well Probot Quicksand Rise Against Satyricon Shai Hulud Static-X Sworn Enemy The Bronx The Dillinger Escape Plan The Suicide Files Zeke

The bands range from old to new and from speed metal to stoner rock to post hardcore, but they’re all worth checking out. Looking through previously mentioned bands in the comments I chime in on the following ones:

Corrosion of Conformity DevilDriver Hypocrisy Neurosis Opeth Spineshank Strapping Young Lad Therapy Therion Unearth Vader

And most important of all, Tool!

Wow, became quite a post.. Cheers, C.M

As comment #9 stated, give Dream Theater a try, especially their “Train of Thought” album based on your preferences.
