It hurts. It really hurts.

Pointed to me by Aq – what happens when the legendary Van Halen play the multi-million selling Jump live while the backing tape with the famous synth from the song is played back at slightly the wrong pitch? Well, you get a combination of the following:

  • The whole band sound ropier than a snake-charming convention. Fail.
  • Eddie Van Halen desperately tries to transpose the music on-the-fly to make it sound good. Fail.
  • Its virtually impossible to transpose it as it is 1.5 frets out. Fail.
  • Thousands of people look on. In dismay. Fail.
  • To compound the situation, a giant inflatable microphone is humped, on-stage. Epic Fail.

Oof, I feel for them…

OMG; that is so painful. I want to stab myself in the ears with knitting needles.

    That’s “awesome”.

This is interesting too, Dave’s isolated vocal track for Running with the Devil:

Epic fail. Makes you feel better that such a huge band can get away with being so terrible though, maybe there’s a chance for the little guys…

 The guitar and bass could have done better. They should have transposed too, and everything would improve… maybe :D It was their fault

I’d still give my right arm for VH to come to the UK… but still not Michael Anthony on bass :(

    Ouch

the audience should have demanded their money back. do you remember when MTV first come out, they seemed to only play this and that dire straights song, err, you know the one, it had rubbish computer graphics.

  • Jim Gatehouse

OK, straits and money for nothing, I had to google that, shame

Sounds to me like someone pissed off the sound crew…

This was a bit hard to listen to, I agree. It reminds me of some of the Kiss footage that I’ve seen/heard. They were right on in the studio, but the concert experience was sometimes a bit trying (but it was the vocals that were way off for them).

I cringed when this was originally posted on BoingBoing last October. Still cringe worthy for Van Halen fans.

C’mon, give these guys a break. The Jump disaster happened during one of the first shows and was already widely discussed on VH fan sites. The other shows received rave reviews and at least Eddie and Dave were back on stage together. ;)

Here’s to a new VH record… and bring back Michael Anthony!!

    s/David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar/ and s/Wolfgang von Sucketh/Michael Anthony/

And that wouldn’t have happened :P Speaking of Michael Anthony, guess he has back home here for father’s day this weekend shooting a round of golf on the same course we were, rock!

Haha… Shit happens, to everybody. Reminds me of the Springsteen gig I saw on Monday in Düsseldorf. Power blew twice during the first three songs. Bruce: “We appologise. That was terrible. Never happened before…” and “The E Street Band is 100% live!!!”. At least he took it with humour and played more than three hours in total to make up for it. :)
