Ubuntu Developer Survey Report and Next Steps

Hot on the heels of my Ubuntu Membership survey report and follow up discussion, I am delighted to present the results of the Ubuntu Developer survey that I issued a little while ago.

Generally the feedback is quite positive, particularly for MOTU applications, but the feedback has highlighted some useful areas in which we discuss some improvements. These are primarily in the area of documentation of the process and expectations for Core Developer and Per-Package Uploader applicants.

Download the report here.

I have kicked off a discussion with the Technical Board and Developer Membership Board to propose a meeting where we can discuss these findings and put in place some next steps to drive some improvements in the issues highlighted.

It seems to me that there must be a deeper issue with the core-devs being unclear about the process that can’t simply be fixed by better documentation. The process for core-dev and MOTU are nearly identical, and MOTU don’t seem to have the same problem.

    Any chance of getting cross-tabs?

I am curious to find out more too. The process may be similar but the expectations I think are quite different, and that may be where much of the problem lies.

What do you mean by cross-tabs?

Cross tabulation. It’s a simple way to look at  how variables are interacting. Here’s Survey Monkey’s explanation:

People who had a really bad experience likely aren’t around to complete the survey: maybe in future we could give this to everyone who applies, whether they succeed or not?
