Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu LTS

I was delighted to read this morning that the Ubuntu Technical Board has approved Xubuntu and Kubuntu to be LTS versions, as well as Edubuntu based on some further discussion. You can read the meeting log here.

Congrats to the Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu communities!

Why not have a single Ubuntu OS that simply offers different DE when u install it? People get confused about all these different namings like Kubuntu, Lubuntu etc. Make it simpler –  a window during installation that asks you what DE would u like – and that’s it.  Single OS name – Ubuntu – better brand recognition.

Writing this from Kubuntu actually and wasnt 10.04 an LTS? im slightly underwhelmed by this ‘news’ because it didnt occur to me that this had to be renewed. I just took it for granted that 12.04 would be one too.

Kubuntu is finally usable after being the red headed Buntu stepchild for quite a while so I might even start installing it on friends and family computers instead of PCLinuxOS which is still wtih Mandriva, the KDE distro of record. Being an LTS is one more reason for me to install for others. . I always give people a choice of desktops (because, surprise, surprise, ONLY the user knows what they prefer. Not me, nor you nor UI ‘experts’) and Ubuntu was the Gnome version i offered (KDE wins 75-25% with ex-Windows users when I give them a choice) to people to test drive.   Since the Fisher-Price Unity desktops replacement gambit, I took Ubuntu out of newbie choice list so it would be nice to be able to offer Kubuntu.

Lubuntu is too recent a part of the Ubuntu development community to qualify (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecognizedDerivatives, last section).
